US-JAIL DEATHS
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca uses a broomstick to push an electric switch that opens the door of jail module 2301, unseen behind him, demonstrating how in October 2003, an inmate was able to enter a locked jail module where another inmate was later killed, as he leads reporters on a tour inside the Men-s Central Jail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles, 19 May 2004. Facing criticism over a spate of deaths in the county-s largest jail, Baca opened up the facility to the media in an effort to stem complaints that the jail is not secure. The latest killing was last month, when authorities say a murder suspect managed to roam the jail freely for hours before strangling a fellow inmate who testified against him.
