IRAQ-US-UNREST-MARINES
A picture released by the US Marines 18 May 2004 shows the Honorable Mr. Gordon R. England (center), Secretary of the Navy, spending time with the men and women of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 466, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, at Al Asad base, west of Baghdad. During his tour of the area, the civilian leader of the Department of the Navy took photographs with the Marines and Sailors and thanked them for their service and sacrifice. More than 40 people were killed in a US air strike on a suspected safe house used by foreign fighters near the Iraqi-Syrian border, coalition officials. Residents of the western desert town of Qaim on the Syrian border said US helicopters targeted a wedding party, apparently after people had fired in the air, a traditional way to celebrate in the Arab world.
