BULGARIA-FRANCE-MITTERRAND-DISSIDENTS-RE-ENACTION
Former French Foreign Minister Roland Dumas (5th R), Former Bulgarian President Jelio Jelev (4th R), former French Ambassador to Bulgaria Bertrand De Lataillade (6th L), current French Ambassador to Bulgaria Etienne de Poncins (4th L), Bulgarian EU commissioner Meglena Kuneva (3rd L), Bulgarian painter Svetlin Russev (6th R), Bulgarian historian Nikolay Vassilev (2nd R) re-enact a breakfast at the French Embassy in Sofia on January 19, 2009. Twelve of the best-known Bulgarian intellectuals, opposing the Communist regime of Todor Zhivkov in 1989, met for breakfast with late French President Francois Mitterrand on January 19, 1989 to hold informal talks in Sofia. The Bulgarian dissident movement, braving a tough communist regime, received the spectacular support of Mitterrand, who publicized its cause abroad twenty years ago.
