SUDAN-SOCIETY-WATER-HEALTH-CONFLICT
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY PETER MARTELL
A Sudanese woman carries a bucket of drinking water as she heads home after pumping it from a recently drilled borehole in the village of Mirindanyi, some 190 kms (120 miles) west of Juba, the capital of semi-autonomous southern Sudan, on January 22, 2009. It seems such a simple task: pumping the handle of a water borehole up and down until the clear and cool liquid splashes into the plastic container. And in the dry and dusty village of Mirindanyi, they have been celebrating doing just that since their pump was installed last year. But it was not always this way. AFP PHOTO/PETER MARTELL
