This handout image received on April 1, 2009 from the NASA Earth Observatory website shows the development of the man-made archipelago known as ?The World? (top-R) and "The Palm" off the coast of the Gulf emirate of Dubai on November 13, 2004. Dubai undertook the massive engineering project to create hundreds of artificial islands along its coastline. Built from sand dredged from the sea floor and protected from erosion by rock breakwaters, the islands are shaped into recognizable forms, including two large palm trees, and a map of the world.
