This combo created from handout images received on April 1, 2009 from the NASA Earth Observatory website shows the development stages of the man-made archipelago known as ?The World? (top-R) and "The Palm" on November 13, 2004 (L) and on February 5, 2009 (R), off the coast of the Gulf emirate of Dubai. Dubai undertook the massive engineering project to create hundreds of artificial islands along its coastline. Built from sand dredged from the sea floor and protected from erosion by rock breakwaters, the islands are shaped into recognizable forms, including two large palm trees, and a map of the world.
