US-SPACE-CURRENT SOLAR IMAGE
This 03 November, 2003 NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory MIDI (Michelson Doppler Imager) image shows giant sunspot 486 (lower-R). 486 produced yet another remarkable solar flare on 02 November. Because the sunspot is nearing the sun's western limb, the blast was not aimed squarely at Earth. Even so, a coronal mass ejection (CME) is heading our way. Auroras could appear 03 or 04 November when the electrified cloud delivers a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field. AFP PHOTO/NASA
