SUDAN-ECONOMY-AGRICULTURE-ENVIRONMENT
TO GO WITH STORY BY GUILLAUME LAVALLEE
Sudanese farmers gather at one of the canals which form part of the Gezira Canal irrigation system, on October 21, 2009, in the village of Tayeba al-Sheikh Abdel Baqi, the centre of local protest against government reforms to the local irrigation system. The "Gezira Scheme" is a labyrinth of irrigation canals spanning 840,000 hectares of fertile land between the Blue Nile and the White Nile, and was set up in 1925 by the British colonial powers to cultivate cotton.
