SUDAN-ECONOMY-AGRICULTURE-ENVIRONMENT
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY GUILLAME LAVALLEE
Osama Daoud, the CEO of the Sudanese Dal Group, speaks during an interview in his office in Omdurman on September 5, 2009. Daoud, who has invested in pivots in the Sudanese sites of al-Aylafoun and Al-Waha near Khartoum, says that Sudan saves 70 per cent of water by using pivots compared to flood irrigation. Sudan wants to boost its agricultural output in coming years but cannot exceed its quota of the Nile water, already challenged by countries on the upstream. The solution resides in the introduction of pivots and the valorisation of rain-fed agriculture, experts say.
