ITALY-POLITICS-LAW-MEDIA-BERLUSCONI-DEMO
Italian writer and journalist Roberto Saviano arrive at Rome' Navona square to take part in a rally against the bill curbing the use of wiretaps, labelled by critics as "gag law" in Rome on July 1, 2010. The law presented by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's government approved at the Italian senate will be debated in parliament on July 29. The law will prevent the media from reporting on official investigations until a preliminary hearing, takes and carries a potential penalty of up to 450,000 Euros (561,236 usd) for publishers and 30 days in jail, up to 10,000 Euros for journalists who publish leaked material obtained through wiretaps before the beginning of a trial. The National Federation of the Press (FNSI) all of Italy's main newspapers and TV opposed the law. Critics of the bill have labelled it a "gagging law", and said its true aim is to shield Berlusconi from embarrassment. AFP PHOTO / ANDREAS SOLARO
