SWITZERLAND-POLITICS-GOVERNMENT
Swiss Social Democratic Party (SP) Simonetta Sommaruga (R) and Swiss Liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) Johann Schneider-Ammann (L) take the oath after they were both elected as new Federal Councillors by the Federal Assembly, a joint session of the House of Representatives and Senate, on September 22, 2010 in Bern. Switzerland's parliament on Wednesday voted Socialist Simonetta Sommaruga into the government in a historic step that gave women a majority of cabinet posts for the first time. Women only gained the vote at national level in 1971 and the first female minister was elected in 1984, and prior to the vote three of the seven ministerial posts in the Federal Council were occupied by women.
