SWITZERLAND-POLITICS-GOVERNMENT
Swiss Federal President Doris Leuthard (L to R) poses with Swiss Federal Councillors Micheline Calmy-Rey, Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, Ueli Maurer, Didier Burkhalter, newly elected Simonetta Sommaruga, newly elected Johann Schneider-Ammann and Federal Chancellor Corina Casanova after the election of two new Federal Councillors by the Federal Assembly, a joint session of the House of Representatives and Senate, on September 22, 2010 in Bern. Switzerland's parliament on Wednesday voted Socialist Simonetta Sommaruga into the government in a historic step that gave women a majority of cabinet posts for the first time. Women only gained the vote at national level in 1971 and the first female minister was elected in 1984, and prior to the vote three of the seven ministerial posts in the Federal Council were occupied by women.
