A surveyor measures the movement of the toxic sludge in a reservoir by the alumina plant in Ajka on October 14, 2010. Hungarian authorities said that the threat of another chemical spill had been averted and villagers could return home, as the plant responsible prepared to resume production. The death toll from the October 4 spill, when a flood of toxic sludge from an alumina plant poured into villages and rivers, meanwhile rose to nine when one of elderly people wounded in the disaster died in hospital.
