KENYA-AIDS-ORPHANS-GRANDMOTHERS-

Six-year-old Joan Achieng (R) stands next to her cousin Michel, 5, as they play in front of their home in Kibera, one of Africa's largest slums, on November 29, 2010. Joan and Michele are being raised by their grandmother who is affiliated with the Nyanyo Project who's goal is to empower African grandmothers who care for their grandchildren orphaned by AIDS. Joan's mother died of AIDS and Michele's mother, infected with HIV and very sick, can no longer take care of her. According to an HIV charity for Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa is more heavily affected by HIV and AIDS than any other region of the world. An estimated 22.5 million people are living with HIV in the region - around two thirds of the global total. In 2009 around 1.3 million people died from AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and 1.8 million people became infected with HIV. Since the beginning of the epidemic 14.8 million children have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS. AFP PHOTO/ROBERTO SCHMIDT
