US-HEALTH-AIDS-ANNIVERSARY
TO GO WITH AFP STORY HEALTH-AIDS-ANNIVERSARY-ELDERLY by Hannah Dreier
Daniel Goldstein, 60, a world-renown artist who specializes in mixed media, used some of his own HIV medication bottles to create a 6-foot sculpture called "Medicine Man" seen on May 27, 2011 in San Francisco, CA. The piece was reproduced in a poster (far right), and a second version of it called "Medicine Man II" was exhibited in South Africa in the MAKE ART STOP AIDS series, an internation traveling program/exhibition of artwork relating to global HIV/AIDS issues. Goldstein, who has been living with HIV for 27 years, has produced a number of AIDS-related sculptures, including "Invisible Man" and "Medicine Man", despite suffering periodic bouts of poor health. While generally healthy these days, he deals with symptoms of lipodystrophy, a medical condition that affects the body's fat tissue. AFP PHOTO/Ryan Anson
