GERMANY-ENERGY-POLITICS-NUCLEAR-WASTE-ASSE
An employee of the Asse GmbH company seal special floor tiles capable of decontamination in front of storage cavern no. 7 at the Asse nuclear waste storage facility near Remlingen, central Germany, on June 22, 2011. Cavern no. 7 is the first to be opened to retrieve stocked nuclear waste, as the facility is at risk to collapse. A recall of about 126,000 barrels with nuclear waste is planned from the Asse pit, a former salt mine in the region, used as a deep geological repository for radioactive waste. Environmentalists and residents plead for the closure of the facility because of the pit's instability and the danger of the hazardous materials stored there. AFP PHOTO / JOCHEN LUEBKE GERMANY OUT
