Celebratory gunfire rocked the city when the insurgents breached the walls of Kadhafi's compound in the centre of the capital on August 23 and sent his forces fleeing, but in a speech carried afterwards by the website of a television station headed by his son Seif al-Islam, the Libyan leader said he had abandoned Bab al-Azizya in a "tactical withdrawal" after it had been wrecked by NATO warplanes.
