(FILES) -- A file photo taken on July 5, 1975 shows Cape Verde's new President Aristides Maria Pereira (L) and Portugal's then Prime Minister Vasco Goncalves signing the Independence Agreement in Praia, Cape Verde. Aristides Maria Pereira, the first president of Cape Verde from 1975 to 1991, died on September 22, 2011 aged 87 in Portugal, the embassy of the former Portuguese colony announced in Lisbon. The former leader of the archipelago off Africa's west coast had been in Portugal since August, where he had a hip operation, the Portuguese Lusa news agency reported. AFP PHOTO
