Secretary-General of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), Aristides Maria Pereira talks following a massive vote for the PAIGC and the union between the independent states of Cape Verde and Guinea Bissau, on July 3, 1975. Aristides Maria Pereira, the first president of Cape Verde from 1975 to 1991, died on September 22, 2011 aged 87 in Portugal, the embassy of the former Portuguese colony announced in Lisbon. The former leader of the archipelago off Africa's west coast had been in Portugal since August, where he had a hip operation, the Portuguese Lusa news agency reported. AFP PHOTO
