US-UN-SYRIA-CHINA-PROTEST
Syrian-Americans protest the veto by China and Russia last month against a UN Security Council resolution condemning the crackdown by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in front of the Chinese consulate in Los Angeles on December 16, 2011. China was among 41 nations to abstain from voting on the resolution, which strongly condemned "continued grave and systematic human rights violations" by Syria that the United Nations estimates has left more than 3,500 dead. Both China and Russia have vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning the crackdown, saying it would be used as an excuse to carry out regime change. The Chinese consulate in LA's Koreatown district was the scene of a shooting a day earlier after scuffles between protesters and security guard, but no one was injured. AFP PHOTO / Frederic J. BROWN
