Jia Qinglin [5-L], chairman of China's political advisory body, the People's Political Consultative Conference hands over the symbolic key to the newly inaugurated high-rise African Union, (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa, built and donated by China at a cost of 200 million USD to the Chairman of the AU Theodoro Obiang Nguema [3-L] on January 28, 2012 watched by other African Heads of State [L-R] AU, Commission Chairman, Jean Ping [2-L], Ethiopian Meles Zenawi [partly obscured] Gabon's Ali Bongo, Rwanda's Paul Kagame, Somalia's Sheikh Sharif Ahmed [8-R], [R-L] Sundan's Omar Bashir [R], Armando Guebuza, Kenya's Mwai Kibaki, Saharawi's Mohamed Abdelaziz [5-R] . The building, which towers above the Ethiopian capital, was opened ahead of the start Sunday of the pan-African body's 18th ordinary summit, a bold symbol of China's rapidly changing role in Africa. Construction was wholly funded by the Chinese government, with even the furnishings paid for by the Asian powerhouse, and most of the construction material was imported from China.
