AFRICANUNION-SUMMIT-COOPERATION-CHINA

Some Africa Heads of State and other dignitaries pose for a photo during the inauguration of a high-rise African Union headquarters , built and donated by China at a cost of $200 million including [L-R] Malawi's Mbingu wa Mutharika, AU, Commission Chairman, Jean Ping [7-L], Chairman of the AU Teodoro Obiang Nguema, Jia Qinglin [5-L], chairman of China's political advisory body, the People's Political Consultative Conference, Ethiopia's Meles Zenawi, Gabon's Ali Bongo, Rwanda's Paul Kagame, and Somalia's Sheikh Sharif Ahmed [3-R], in Addis Ababa on January 28, 2012. The building, which towers above the Ethiopian capital, was opened ahead of the start Sunday of the pan-African body's 18th ordinary summit, a bold symbol of China's rapidly changing role in Africa. Construction was wholly funded by the Chinese government, with even the furnishings paid for by the Asian powerhouse, and most of the construction material was imported from China.
