TO GO WITH STORIES "ALGERIA-FRANCE-HISTORY-50YEARS"
A picture taken on August 4, 1962 shows Algerian leader Ahmed Ben Bella (C, L) waving to cheering supporters as he arrives in Algiers, one month after Algeria formally became independent after 132 years of French presence. France and the Algerian National Liberation Front (FLN) signed a treaty on March 18, 1962 in the French Alpine town of Evian putting an end to the Algerian war which had lasted for almost eight years and resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. Ahmed Ben Bella, who will become the first president of independent Algeria, has been freed on the day of the signature of the treaty. AFP PHOTO / FILES
