Kim Castro from Mount Saint Mary's College watches a yellow eel climb out of a glass jar May 1, 2013 in Newburgh, New York. Castro is part of a freshman biology class that helps the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and and Cornell’s Water Resource Institute monitor eel populations on the Quassaick Creek neaby. Eels are under pressure in the Atlantic region, very restricted fishing is allowed in the US and the European Union. There is special demand in Japan where it is believed to have medicinal benefits.
