TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY SEBASTIAN SMITH
Chris Bowser, estuary educator for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Cornell’s Water Resource Institute, gathers equipment May 1, 2013 in Newburgh, New York. Browser was helping a freshman biology class from Mount Saint Mary's College monitor glass eel populations on the Quassaick Creek neaby as part of a project by the DEC and the Cornell institute. Eels are under pressure in the Atlantic region, very restricted fishing is allowed in the US and the European Union. There is special demand in Japan where it is believed to have medicinal benefits.
