TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY Thomas CABRAL

Lee Sterling poses at the Necessidades Palace in Lisbon on June 21, 2013. Lee is one of the four known survivors from the debacle of 1940 saved by visas issued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes, then consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux. He arrived in Portugal with his parents and his sister when he was four years old. Thirty descendants of survivors from the debacle of 1940, who were able to leave France thanks to the visas issued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes, were allowed to consult the register where were recorded the visas issued by the Portuguese consul, against the instructions of Antonio Salazar dictatorship.
