US-ANIMALS-SNOWY OWL-FILES
(FILES) Photo courtesy City Wildlife dated January 30, 2014 in Washington, DC shows the snowy owl that has been spotted recently in the downtown area. The bird was reportedly struck by a bus January 30 and taken to the Smithsonian National Zoo for treatment. The owl, believed to be a female, is now in the care of City Wildlife, an organisation with the mission to assist wildlife in urban areas. The owl suffered a broken toe and undetermined injuries. Clinic director Alicia DeMay who examined the snowy owl January 31, 2014 said it is in stable condition. Awaited results of blood tests will determine further treatment. Snowy Owls, which are usually found in the northern circumpolar region, are a rare sighting in the Washington metro area. AFP PHOTO / Abby HEHMEYER - CITY WILDLIFE - Hand-out
