Detail of a large collaborative work by artist Melinda Hunt of the Hart Island Project and photographer Joel Sternfeld April 2, 2014 in her studio in Peekskill, New York. Copies of historic records found in the municipal archives by Hart surround Sternfeld's photographs of Vicki Pavina, whose baby was buried on Hart Island.. Hart Island in the Long Island Sound is New York City's public burial ground, for those bodies that are unclaimed or for those unable to afford a burial.
