Melinda Hunt of the Hart Island Project holds a large transparency of a photograph by Joel Sternfeld of infant coffins on Hart Island April 2, 2014 in her studio in Peekskill, New York. In the background is the second image of a diptych. The photographs are of the "baby trench" and small wood coffins containing the remains of infants to be buried on Hart Island taken in March 1992 as part of a book called "Hart Island" by Hunt and Sternfeld. Hart Island in the Long Island Sound is New York City's public burial ground, for those bodies that are unclaimed or for those unable to afford a burial.
