Iraqi Shiite militia fighters ride in an armoured personnel carrier (APC) after pushing back Islamic State (IS) militants on September 3, 2014, on the road between Amerli and Tikrit. Amerli was besieged when IS-led militants launched a major offensive in June, overrunning chunks of five Iraqi provinces and sweeping security forces aside, though security forces have now begun to claw back some ground.
