CHILE-ENERGY-RENEWABLES-BIOGAS
TO GO WITH AFP STORY by Miguel Sanchez
Picture of methane gas bubbles taken at the biogas plant of a farm in the town of Tinguiririca, about 150 km south of Santiago, Chile, on November 4,2014. This biogas plant turns pig and cattle manure into methane to generate up to 4 megawatts (MW) of electricity of the farm's own consumption. Biogas is a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide produced by feeding cow dung, human waste and water into an airtight underground tank known as digester and allowing it to decompose. Chilean ranchers are producing their own biogas and getting rid of some bad smells by recycling animal dung to generate an alternative energy source in a country where electricity is expensive and difficult to transport.
