CHILE-ENERGY-RENEWABLES-BIOGAS
TO GO WITH AFP STORY by Miguel Sanchez
A man operates a gas pipe at a biogas plant in Pichidegua, about 180 km south of Santiago, Chile, on October 21,2014. This biogas plant turns pig and cattle manure into methane to generate electricity enough to supply 2,500 homes. Biogas is a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide produced by feeding cow dung, human waste and water into an airtight underground tank known as digester and allowing it to decompose. Chilean ranchers are producing their own biogas and getting rid of some bad smells by recycling animal dung to generate an alternative energy source in a country where electricity is expensive and difficult to transport.
