IRAQ-US-UNREST-NAJAF
A plume of smoke floats above the holy Shiite city of Najaf 25 August 2004 after a US F-16 jetfighter fired a missile targeting a position of radical Iraqi Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr-s Mehdi Army in the Old City near the shrine of Imam Ali. Iraq-s Shiite spiritual leader Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani rushed back from abroad to "save Najaf" after US forces smashed militia defenses to trap hundreds of Sadr supporters in the shrine. Sistani was resting in the southern city of Basra after crossing the Kuwaiti border on his way home from London, where he went for medical treatment just as the Najaf fighting began three weeks ago, aides said.
