IRAQ-US-UNREST-NAJAF
Ali al-Safi al-Mussawi, the Basra representative of Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, the highest Shiite authority, speaks at the al-Habilla mosque in the southern Iraqi city of Basra 25 August 2004. Sistani rushed back from abroad to "save Najaf" after US forces smashed militia defenses to trap hundreds of supporters of rebel cleric Moqtada Sadr in the shrine of Imam Ali in the city. Sistani was resting in Basra after crossing the Kuwaiti border on his way home from London, where he went for medical treatment just as the Najaf fighting began three weeks ago, aides said.
