IRAQ-FRANCE-HOSTAGE
French envoy Hubert Colin de Verdiere (R) greets a Sunni cleric as French Ambassador to Iraq Bernard Bajolet (C) looks on outside the Umm al-Qura mosque in Baghdad 01 September 2004. Verdiere, a top ministry official, was sent to Iraq to press for the release of two French journalists taken hostage in the country. A group calling itself the Islamic Army in Iraq claimed it had kidnapped Radio France correspondent Christian Chesnot and Georges Malbrunot of Le Figaro newspaper, who went missing in Iraq on August 20. A second ultimatum set by the kidnappers expired late yesterday with no fresh news of the fate of the two men, who warned that their lives were at risk if France did not change the headscarf law.
